MCP Explained: Why Model Context Protocol Changes Everything for AI Agents

The protocol itself handles capability discovery (the client learns what tools are available), invocation (the client calls a tool with parameters), and response handling (the client receives structured results). Think of it like USB for AI. Before USB, every peripheral needed its own connector and driver. MCP provides a universal standard that any AI model can use to connect to any tool.
MCP vs Function Calling vs Custom APIs
A reasonable question is: how does MCP differ from function calling, which models like GPT-4 and Claude already support?
Function calling defines how a model requests that a function be executed — it is the mechanism by which a model says "I want to call this function with these parameters." But function calling does not standardise how the function itself is implemented, discovered, or made available. Each application defines its own functions in its own way.
MCP operates one level above function calling. It standardises how tools are described, discovered, and accessed. An MCP server can be written once and used by any MCP-compatible client, regardless of which foundation model is behind it. Function calling is typically the underlying mechanism that MCP clients use to interact with servers, but MCP adds the portability and standardisation layer on top.
Custom APIs, meanwhile, are the traditional approach — build a REST or GraphQL endpoint, write client code to call it, handle authentication, parse responses, and manage errors. This works, but every integration is a standalone piece of engineering. MCP provides a structured framework that eliminates much of this boilerplate.
In practice, the three approaches are complementary. MCP servers often wrap existing APIs, and MCP clients use function calling under the hood. The value of MCP is in the standardisation layer that makes everything interoperable and portable.
